In the spring of 2009 DVC invited a Basic Skills English class to participate in the Smartxt program. Following this project the Alternate Media Specialist, Rose Desmond, had around 12 students from the English class approach her and note that the Kurzweil program helped quite a bit and that they would like to get it for other class. As Rose reviewed their Disabled Students Services (DSS) files she found that these DSS students had never used the Kurzweil accommodation nor other alternate media services. Through this program students experienced the benefits of DSS.
